Colossians: A Political Study – Part 1

Colossians: A Political Study – Part 1

I am going to be starting a study on the book of Colossians here at Community of the Risen.  It will be focusing on political theology. Before I get too far into the study, I would like to first make a short post on an introduction to the book of Colossians.  This information comes from Raymond Brown’s An Introduction to the New Testament (a wonderful resource for both the Seminarian and the beginner).

DATE: If by Paul, 61-63 (or slightly later), or 54-56 from Ephesus. If the work is pseudonymous (about 60 percent of critical scholarship hold this point of view), it would have been written in the 80s from Ephesus (look for a forthcoming post on the authorship of Colossians).

AUTHENTICITY: There is a lot of debate in biblical scholarship as to who wrote the book.  I will try to be fair to all sides in this study.

FORMAL DIVISION
A: Opening Formula (1:1-2)
B: Thanksgiving (1:3-8)
C: Body (1:9-4:6)
D: Greetings and Concluding Formula (4:7-18)
