Daybreakers (Movie Review)
Daybreakers – set in the not too distant future – chronicles a world now controlled by vampires due to an epidemic that spread about ten years earlier. Ethan Hawke, a vampire scientist, works with a corporation trying to find a ‘blood substitute’ for vampires living off of a dying human population.
The Spierig brothers, who both directed and wrote the film, did a good job of creating an alternative world that mirrors our own futures if we do not start living in sustainable ways. They did this without the bare obviousness of movies like Shyamalan’s The Happening.
William Dafoe does a great job in the move and so does Ethan Hawke.
The movie, as a whole, however seemed to fall flat towards the end. There was little explanation as to why things worked out the way they did. The twists towards the end obviously point towards a sequel, but I’m not sure I would see it in theaters. Although the movie is a vampire movie, it is really more of a zombie genre because of the infection elements and seems to have elements from movies like I am Legend and 28 Days.
All in all, the movie has some good themes, but you can wait until you see it on netflix or your blockbuster.
