When talking about end times, who is right?

This morning I had a conversation with one of my more conservative evangelical friends. We were talking about youth ministry, then we were talking about theology, then he brought up some questions about how people are saved. We talked a little longer before he brought up “the mark of the beast” (Revelation 13:18), an image which I think of as highly symbolic and historically specific, representing first century political circumstances (while of course still offering us a lens for understanding our current situation), specifically those surrounding or resembling Emperor Nero, if anyone, also known as Neron Caesar, a particularly oppressive figure even among the Caesars (for some good and accessible commentary on this see Bruce Metzger’s Breaking the Code, page 76-77). But of course my friend, being the good dispensationalist he is, sees it as a literal mark which will be placed on or in people who deny Christ in the “End Times,” making it possible for them to buy and sell goods. He was only asking about whether or not God will still save those who verbally and physically deny him while still believing in him in their hearts, which doesn’t have to be specifically an “end times” conversation, so I didn’t think it was necessary for me to reveal to him that I thought his eschatological perspective was a load of crap. He almost immediately brought up politics, “you know Obama wants to ‘chip’ people with a microchip…”

And that’s when I got to thinking…

Why do people believe in the literal “mark of the beast,” not to mention all the other problematic images in Revelation? Is it really because they read scripture and that was the most obvious interpretation (I’ll save questioning their hermeneutics for later)? Is it really only because that’s what’s been passed down to them (I’m sure this is often it!)? Or is it because it makes for very effective scare tactics?

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that dispensationalist literalism makes for very powerful conservative propaganda. I believe that this is part of the reason it is so alive and well in our world. While George W. Bush was in office, dispensationalism was used as propaganda for people to support war in Iraq and to give up on peace making in the middle east. Now that we have Barack Obama in office, it’s the mark of the beast language that scares people into looking negatively upon anything the president does or says. Whatever the situation, dispensationalism is good at twisting current events, no matter how horrific they are or how really good they really may be, and adapting itself so that everything is secret knowledge for the conservative dispensationalist. So the question is, do dispensationalists believe their outlandish interpretations because they’re being honest with the text or is it because it conveniently fits into their conservative bias and fear mongering? Is the literal and future mark of the beast expectation a reasonable interpretation or is it just a convenient scare tactic?

1. For those of you who read my blog on a regular basis, I am taking a bit of a haitus on new content after listening to Mark Driscoll’s latest sermon on ‘the dance of Mahanaim.’ I will try to put some other new content up here and there, but I am really going to be spending a few weeks looking at what some of the major evangelical leaders today are saying about sexuality. I think there may be a major post coming in a few weeks on this subject.

2. As I try to get put a variety of Christian opinions about abortion on here, I am also now trying to put a variety of opinions about prop 8 on here for your linking pleasure. Over at Bicycle Muse, I want you to read his full post on prop 8, but I want you to here this quote that particularly resonated with me:

Public policy is the act of constantly navigating between two extremes; nothing goes or anything goes. We constantly see this tension when we talk about the hot political topics of today be it abortion, immigration, economics, military action or, in this case, marriage. In other words, public policy often comes down to the tension between security and freedom; highly controlled or loosely allowed. From a secular as well as a religious standpoint, limitations and boundaries are essential for social order. The question that remains is who sets the boundaries? Are they self-imposed and do we practice self-control (anarchy)? Is control imposed upon us by others (dictatorship)? Do we gather together and agree on a common standard of control and create communal boundaries (democracy)?

3. Over at blip there is a good discussion beginning about iconoclasts and their opponents. I would suggest joining in if you feel strongly about it.

4. On Beauty’s Road and Common Root are both asking how Christian communities are responding to the financial Crisis.

5. According to these pictures, we have no financial crisis (thanks to Pat for linking me to this).

6. Torture and America – Read all about it.

7. What do you think of emergent homeschooling?

8. Rumors have been circulating about Hillary being secretary of state that are more than just internet whispers. The former rival recently met with Obama in Chicago, and one person is guessing why.

1. Some thing that Joe Biden will play good cop while Obama’s new chief of staff will play bad cop.

2. One person writes on why Obama should include McCain in his cabinet. I think this is the BEST idea I have head in a while and hope that others will encourage Obama to do the same.

3. Will females be represented on Obama’s Cabinet? This is question we all should be watching closely for in the announcements next week.

4. With the holidays coming up, Jonathon brings up the catch-22 involved with retailers this Christmas. On the one hand, we don’t want to be consumed by consumeristic tendencies, but on the other hand not buying will hurt our economy overall. See the New York Time Article on the economy for more.

5. Over at FP Passport, I am happy that Obama is considering a regional approach to Afghanistan, but am still angry that he is considering a bailout for automakers (Jordon Cooper seems to share my anger…while you’re there also look at what Starbucks would look like if it were a church). I would encourage everyone again to read about the famine in Afghanistan and get president-elect Obama to help fix the conditions which lead people towads terrorism in Afghanistan.

6. Lord, we pray for Wilmington and the 7,000 who have lost their jobs in this unfortunate layoffs at DHL. Please help Clinton County recover this and get them back on their feet.

7. The New York Time also deals with the catch-22 of foreign policy having to do with Pakistan and the Taliban. Now that Pakistan is actually taking action, the times reports that it is much more difficult for Pakistan than they originally thought it would be. They have to destroy elaborate tunnel system to get to the Taliban. This would not be so difficult if they could resort to what the times calls “the scorched early policy,” but this type of fighting alienates the neutral Pakistanis and throws them further into the hands of the Taliban. If we support Pakistan by giving them more resources, they will use it for more money in a war that, even with full sustained military action as in the region they are in now, is much more difficult to “win” because of the elusive nature of the enemy. The soluation? Humanitarian aid and decisions made by non-western leaders from Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the Taliban. This is the only way to get the aid in to the people who need it most.

8. The extreme home make over Haifa Street Edition. At least there seems to be some good news in the world. =) Read the essay on it here.

9. The president of Iran sent a letter to congratulate Mr. Obama upsetting conservatives and receiving praise from moderate politicians. It will be interesting to see how things turn out for Ahmahenjad in the upcoming election in Iran. Lord, we ask for your divine presence to be in Iran. We ask for your spirit to speak to these people. We ask for your power to present in all of these situations.

10. Father Stephen quotes Kallistos Ware’s Cosmic Christ and it is worth reading to get an Eastern Orthodox perspective on creation.

11. More talk about Shane Claiborne at Evangelical Political Analysis.

12. Alan Creech gives a timely post on St. Martin in the midst of veterans day.

A resurgence of the Taliban along the Afghanistan border (many think they are operating out of Pakistan) has placed a stranglehold on Western objectives in Afghanistan. The war in Iraq has pushed our assets mostly to another country, and we do not even have enough resources to provide security to fix a dam and other domestic projects of the Afghani people. How can we ever win their hearts and minds?
